Chap. 454.—An ACT for the relief of R. H. Downman.
Approved March 5, 1888.
Whereas R. H. Downman, in his deposition taken before
the special committee appointed by the house of delegates,
under a resolution passed November the twenty-ninth, eigh-
teen hundred and eighty-four, of which the Honorable J. B.
Moore was chairman, stated that as the duly elected and
qualified clerk of the county court of Fauquier county, he
had regularly settled with the auditor of public accounts for
all moneys, dues, and so forth, due the commonweulth
received by him by virtue of his office, and taken receipts
therefor, which receipts by misadventure had been lost; and
whereas no credit had been-given to said Downman, owing
to the irregularities and mismanagement of William R.
Smith, a clerk in the office of the said auditor of public
accounts; and whereas the deposition of said Downman is
uncontradicted: now therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the auditor of public accounts be, and he is hereby required
to credit the account of said R. H. Downman upon the books
of his office, between the periods of September the first,
eighteen hundred and seventy-seven, and September the first,
eighteen hundred and eighty-three, with the various sums
claimed to have been paid by the said Downman to the com-
monwealth of Virginia in his deposition aforesaid.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
