Chap. 319.—An ACT to incorporate the Norfolk and Dismal Swamp :
steamboat company.
Approved March 1, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That |
R. A. Dobie, T. B. Kight, G. N. R. Barrett, C. H. Johnson, -
W. P. Johnson, W. Y. Johnson, George Beveridge, F. N. Mul- ;
len, John Jacobs, J. S. McCoy, Frank Raper, Willoughby .
Lynch, J. C. Lynch, C. R. Van de Carr, and such other per-
sons as they may associate with them, and their successors, ..
be and they are hereby constituted a body politic and corpo- ;
yrate under the name and style of the Norfolk and Dismal .
Swamp steamboat company, for the purpose of acquiring or .
constructing a steamboat or steamboats, or barges or lighters,
and operating the same on the waters navigable, or canals of
the state of Virginia or contiguous states.
2. That the said company shall have the powers, rights,
privileges, and franchises necessary and proper to acquire and
construct a steamboat or steamboats, or barges or lighters,
for the purpose of transporting passengers, lumber, wood, and
such other freights as they may have cause to carry from and
to any point or points on the routes they may operate.
3. That said company shall have the powers to acquire,
hold, and employ such machinery and appliances as they may
acquire, and may purchase and hold such land, docks, wharves,
and personal property as may be necessary for the successful
operation of said business.
4. The capital stock of said company shall not be less than
three thousand dollars nor more than thirty thousand dollars,
to be divided into shares of one hundred dollars each, to be

represented by certificates of stock issued by said company;
also with authority to issue bonds as the directory may deem
necessary for the purpose of purchasing, building, owning,
and Uperauink steamboats and barges.
5. That the said company shall be and is hereby invested
with and possessed of all the powers conferred upon such
companies by the general assembly of this state, and is sub-
ject to all the limitations of same not inconsistent with this
act.
6. That any five of the aforesaid named incorporators shall
have power and authority to organize for business by the
election of a president, secretary, and treasurer, and a full
board of directors from the passage of this act.
7. All taxes and dues to the commonwealth by the said
company, shall be paid in lawful money of the United States
and not in coupons.
8. This act shall be in force from its passage.
