Chap. 177,—An ACT to authorize the board of directors of the peni-
tentiary of Virginia to restore the burnt buildings of that institu-
tion, and to make an appropriation for the same. .
Approved February 23, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the board of directors of the penitentiary be and they are
hereby authorized and directed to proceed without delay, in
conjunction with the superintendent, who shall utilize as tar
as practicable the unemployed force at his command, to
restore, in a plain and substantial manner, the buildings
recently destroyed by fire in that institution: provided that
the entire cost of the buildings hereby authorized shall not
exceed thirty thousand dollars.
2. That a sum not exceeding thirty thousand dollars is
hereby appropriated for that purpose, to be paid out of any
money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, upon the
warrant of the board of directors, countersigned by the secre-
tary of said board, upon the auditor of public accounts.
3. That the said board of directors shall make a full and
specific account of their proceedings to the governor, to be
by him communicated to the general assembly.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
