Chap. 12.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section let of an act ap-
proved May 18, 1887, entitled an act to authorize a subscription by
the county of Chesterfield to the stock of the Petersburg and Ches-
terfield Railroad Company.
Approved January 12, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That
section one of the act approved May eighteenth, eighteen
hundred and eighty-seven, entitled an act to authorize a sub-
scription by the county of Chesterfield to the stock of the
Petersburg and Chesterfied railroad company and its branches,
be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§1. That the county of Chesterfield may subscribe one hun-
dred thousand dollars of the stock of the Petersburg and Ches-
sentiae al a company and its branches, and an election to
ascertain the will of the qualified voters of the said county
shall be held in the manner prescribed by law on a day to be
designated by the judge of the county court of said county,
in term time or in vacation; and if three-fifths of said quali-
fied voters voting upon the question are in favor of the sub-
scription, and that said three-fifths includes a majority of the
votes cast by freeholders at such election, the county court of
said county shall at its next session, enter of record an order |
requiring the supervisors of said county, at their next regu- )
lar meeting or adjourned meeting thereof, to carry out the
wishes of the voters as expressed at said election; thereupon
the said board of supervisors shall appoint an agent to make
subscription, which subscription shall be paid as called for by
the Petersburg and Chesterfield railroad company, in bonds
of the said county conditioned as follows: The rate of inter-.
est on said bonds shall be six per centum per annum. The
interest on said bonds shall only commence on the first day
of January or July next preceding the date of the completion
of the railroad from Petersburg to Chesterfield courthouse to
Manchester, including the main line and branch lines. The
principal of said bonds shall be due in thirty years: provided,
a railroad is built across said county to Manchester, but the
bonds shall be void, and as if they had never been issued,
unless the road is completed across said county within the
time specified in the charter of the said Petersburg and Ches-
terfield railroad company, to-wit: within ten years from
March first, eighteen hundred and eighty-seven. Said bonds
shall be signed by the president or chairman of the board of
supervisors and attested by the clerk of the county court.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
