Chap. 119.—An ACT for working and repairing the public roads in
Nottoway county.
Approved February 13, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the judge of the county of Nottoway shall, at the February
or March term of the county court, eighteen hundred and
eighty-eight, and annually thereafter, appoint one or more
commissioners, whose duty it shall be to let, by contract, the
working and repairing, and keeping in good order for the
ensuing twelve months, the road known as Cox road, from
Crosses’ bridge to Blackstone, in the county of Nottoway.
The said commissioners shall take from the contracting party,
or parties, a bond, payable to himself as commissioner, for
the faithful performance of his duty, in a penalty double the
amount of contract, with security to be approved by said
commissioner. The said commissioner shall report the con-
dition of said road to the county court, from time to time, as
the court may require. At the expiration of six months
from date of contract, if the commissioner reports the road
in good condition, and that the repairs had been done accord-
ing to contract and in good faith, the judge shall certify the
allowance of one-half of the amount agreed upon by said
contract to the board of supervisors, and said board shall
draw a warrant upon the county treasurer, payable to said
contractor, for said amount. At the expiration of the twelve
months the commissioner shall report the condition of said
.road, and if in good repair the board of supervisors shall
draw its warrant upon the county treasurer for the balance
due the contractor upon said contract. All male persons hereto-
fore assigned to and required to work on said road from Crosses’
bridge to Blackstone shall be compelled to work two days in
each year on said road when summoned by said contractor.
This work may be taken in consideration by the commissioner
when contracting for working said road. The court may
allow the commissioner a reasonable compensation, not to ex-
ceed two dollars per day, payable out of the county treasury.
