Chap. 93.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections 70, 71, 72, and 73
of chapter 9, of anact entitled an act providing a charter for the city
of Norfolk, in force January 21, 1ss4.
Approved April 28, 1887.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections seventy, seventy-one, seventy-two, and seventy-three
of chapter nine of the charter of the city of Norfolk, in force
January twenty-first, eighteen hundred and eighty-four, be
amended and re-enacted to read as follows :
$70. The board of school trustees for the city of Nortolk
shall consist of two members trom each ward of said city, to-
gether with the president of the common council and tbe
president of the select council, who shall be ex-officio members
of said board.
$71. That the four members of the board who were elected
by the popular vote at the election held on the fourth Thurs-
day in May, eighteen hundred and ciebty-six, shall hold their
positions until July first. erghteen hundred and ninety, and
that the four members of the board who were elected the
nineteen day ot July, eighteen hundred and etzhty-six, by the
board to fill the vacancies, shall hold their positions until the
first dav of July, eighteen hundred and eighty-eight.
€72.° There shall be elected by the qualitied voters in each
ward of said city, on the fourth Thursday in May, eizhteen
hundred and cighty-cight, and biennially thereafter, one
elector as a member of the board of school trustees, who shall
be a resident of his ward during his term of oftice, to serve tor
four years, and until his successor is elected and qualified.
§73. Incase of a vacancy in the board, the members thereof
shall elect a qualified person to fill the same, from the ward
in which such vacancy exists. for the unexpired time.
2. The said board of school trustees shall have and exercise
all the powers and duties which have been heretofore, or may
hereafter be vested in the school board of said city, by law or
ordinance.
3. A quorum of the board shall consist of a number of mem-
bers one in excess of the number of wards in the city.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
