Chap. 419.—An ACT to authorize the governor to provide for the sup-
port and maintenance of insane persons in jails of the common-
wealth until they can be admitted to the asylums of the State.
Approved May 24, 1887.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the governor be and he is hereby authorized and empowered
to cause insane persons confined in the different jails of the
commonwealth to be supported and maintained outside of
the asylums of the State, until they can be provided for
therein, and to make all necessary and proper arrangements
for their transportation, support and maintenance.
2. The expense of removing, supporting, and maintaining
such insane persons, shall be paid out of the State treasury,
upon the order of the governor: provided that the cost of
their maintenance shal] not be more than is now paid for
their support; but in cases where the insane persons shall
have any estate or effects, over and above the support of his
or her family, the same shall be applied to the defraying of
such expense, so far as they will go, or so far as may be ne-
cessary. |
3. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this uct are
hereby repealed. ]
4. Phis act shall be in force from its passage.
