Chap. 16.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 5 of chapter 81 of
the Acts of 1874, as to the county of Clarke, as amended by an act
entitled an act to amend and re-enact sections 5, 6 and 7 of an act
for the protection of sheep in the counties of Frederick, Clarke and
Charlotte, approved March 6th, 1874, as to the county of Clarke,
approved February 21st, 1882.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section five of chapter eighty- -one of the Acts of eighteen bun-
dred and seventy-four, as to the county of Clarke, as amended
by an act entitled an act to amend and re-enact sectfons fiv e,
six and seven of an act for the protection of sheep in the coun-
ties of Clarke, Frederick and Charlotte, approved March
sixth, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, as tu the county
of Clarke, approved February twenty-first, eighteen bundred
and eigbty-two, be amended and re-cnacted so as to read as
follows:
§ 5. That when the assessors shall have ascertained the
number of dogs, they shall levy and cause to be collected as
a license tax for keeping dogs, the sum of seventy-five cents
for each dog so assessed, and the said sum shall be collected
and accounted for by the treasurers of tbe said counties as
county levies are by law directed to be cellected and accounted
for, and the said treasurers shall keep a separate account of'
money arising from the said tax on dogs in their respective
counties, and pay the same, after deducting commissions and
delinquents, to a commissioner hereafter authorized in this
act, and the said money shall be and is hereby appropriated
as a fund for remuncrating the inbabitants of said counties
for any loss they may sustain by sheep being killed or severely
wounded by a dog or dogs, and tor the destruction of pan-
thers, wolves, foxes, and “wild cats, and the residue, if any,
to be divided among the several magisterial districts of each
of said counties for free school purposes: provided however,
that all hounds owned and kept by persons living in that
part of the county of Clarke lying east of the Shenandoah
river shall be exempt from the tax imposed upon the dogs by
this act.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
