Chap. 130.—An ACT to allow the deputy of John M. Carroll, late
treasurer of the city of Staunton, further time to levy for taxes.
Approved May 5, 1887,
Whereas soveral years since, John M. Carroll, late treasurer
of the city of Staunton, disappeared from said city; and
whereas in consequence of bis prolonged absencé, the busi-
ness of his office was so impeded that none of the taxes could
be collected for months, the tax tickets being locked up in an
iron safe; and whereas by reason of the above-stated causes,
the tax bills for the years eighteen hundred and eighty WO,
three, and four, could not be collected within tho time pre-
scribed by law, ‘and the collection of the same cannot now be
enforced unless the time for collecting said tax tickets shall
be extended; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
E. M. Cushing, the deputy, of suid treasurer, or such other
person or persons as may be appointed by the hustings court
of said. city of Staunton for that purpose, shall have full
ower and authority to collect by levy or distress for the
benefit of the sureties of said treasurer, the tax tickets for
taxes and levies, both State and city, which are now in the
hands of said treasurer or his said deputy, and which may re-
main unpaid; and for that purpose said deputy and such other
person or persons as may be appointed as aforesaid, are bereby
granted all of the powers which are now conterred upon
treasurers for the collection of revenue: provided that the
powers conferred by this act, shall cease and determine at
the expiration of twelve months from the passage thereof,
except as to such proceedings as shall Lave been commenced
in pursuance of its provision.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
