CHAP. 407.—An ACT to amend and re-enact an act entitled an act to
incorporate the town of Chase city, in the county of Mecklenburg,
Virginia, passed April 1, 1873.
Approved March 3, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the town of Chase city, in the county of Mecklenburg, as char-
tered by act of assembly of April first, eighteen hundred and
seventy-three, entitled an act to incorporate the town of Chase
city, in the county of Mecklenburg, shall continue to be a
town corporate by the name of Chase city, and by that name
shall have and exercise the powers conferred upon towns by
and be subject to the provisions of the fifty-fourth chapter of
the Code of Virginia, so far as the provisions of said chapter
are not in conflict with the provisions of this act.
2. The boundaries of said town of Chase city shall be as fol-
lows: the lands extending one-fourth of a mile east, west and
south, and one-half a mile north, from the intersection of Main
and Second streets in the said town of Chase city, with such
additional land as shall be necessary to. make’an oblong square.
3. The officers of said town of Chase city shall consist of a
mayor, six aldermen, four of whom shall constitute a quorum
to transact business, and a sergeant, who shall hold their office
aa two years, and until their successors are appointed.
.. The said council shall have power to pass all by-laws and
ordinances for the government of the town of Chase city that
they may deem proper, not in conflict with the constitution of
the state or of the United States; and also to provide for keep-
ing the streets in order and paving the same, and for other ne-
cessary improvements, for which purpose they may levy such
tax as they may deem proper, not exceeding fifty cents on the
hundred dollars.
5. The mayor shall preside at all the meetings of the coun-
cil, and when they are equally divided shall, in addition to his
individual vote, give the casting vote; and he shall be invested
with all the powers of a justice of the peace within the limits
of said town of Chase city, except that no atv warrants shall
be tried by him,
6. The sergeant of said town of Chase city shall be a con-
servator of the peace, and be invested with the full powers of
a constable within the limits of said town of Chase city; also
have the power to arrest offenders within orfe mile of said limits
for offences committed within the limits of said town of Chase
city. Heshall collect the town taxes, and may distrain and
sell for state taxes, and shall have in other respects: like powers
to force the collection thereof.
7. The time for holding an election for said officers, agreea-
ble to this charter, shall be the fourth Thursday in May, eight-
een hundred and eighty-seven, reasonable notice being given
of the place of voting, within said town of Chase city; and
once in every two years thereafter, an election shall be held for
said officers on the same day in May.
8. F. B. Roberts is hereby appointed mayor, and M. E.
Hardy, T. F. Pettus, W. K. Holt, George A. Endly, H.
Brooks and John Mack, are appointed aldermen, and James
E. Bell, sergeant of said town; and the said board are hereby
invested with all the powers, functions and duties of said office
as prescribed in this act, and the said fifty-fourth chapter of
the Virginia Code, and will hold the same until the regular
election day, as herein set forth, and their successors are
elected and qualified.
9. This act shall be in force from its passage.
