CHAP. 404.—An ACT for the relief of the sureties of Z. T. Cecil, late
treasurer of Lee county.
Approved March 3, 1886.
Whereas, Z. T. Cecil, late treasurer of Lee county, made de-
fault in the payment of the revenue due to the state of Virginia
from the county of Lee, for year ending June fifteenth, eight-
een hundred and eighty-three, and the payment of the same
devolved upon the sureties of the said Cecil, in his official bond
as said treasurer; and whereas, a part of said sum for which
said treasurer defaulted was interest which had accumulated or
the balance due from him on the several subjects of taxation in
said county for the year eighteen hundred and eighty-two; and
whereas, the auditor of public accounts for the state of Virginia
had drawn his warrant on the treasurer of the state for the sum
of six thousand five hundred and forty dollars and twenty-four
cents, dated on the twenty-eighth day of November, eighteen
hundred and eighty-two, in favor of the superintendent of schools
for Lee county, which warrant was endorsed to and deposited
with the said Cecil, as treasurer of said county of Lee, as re-
quired by law; and warrants were drawn by said superintendent
and paid by said treasurer, amounting to a sum equal to said
warrant, which warrants so drawn by said county superintendent
were all paid by said treasurer, exept a small sum, on or before
the fifteenth day of June, eighteen hundred and eighty-three,
but said warrant was not returned by said treasurer to the au-
ditor’s office until the day of March, eighteen hundred
and eighty-four; and whereas, a part of said indebtedness ot
said treasurer, devolving for payment upon the said Cecil’s
sureties for payment as aforesaid, was the interest which had
accumulated on six thousand five hundred and forty dollars and
twenty-four cents, the sum of said warrant, from the fifteenth
day of June, eighteen hundred and eighty-three, to the first day
of April, eighteen hundred and eighty-four; and whereas, the
amount of said warrant had been paid to teachers of the public
free schools in the county of Lee, and as the state lost nothing
by the failure of the said Cecil to return said warrant sooner;
therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Z. T. Cecil, late treasurer of Lee county, and his sureties, be
and they are hereby released from the payment of three hun-
dred and nine dollars, being the interest on an amount equal to
said warrant aforesaid for six thousand five hundred and forty
dollars and twenty-four cents, from the fifteenth day of June,
eighteen hundred and eighty- three, to the first day of March,
eighteen hundred and eighty-four.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
