Chap. 352.—An ACT to incorporate the Grand Lodge of the Order of
Temperance Workers of the State of Virginia. |
Approved March 1, 1886.
Whereas, there is established at Floyd court-house, Virginia,
a temperance and benevolent association, known as the Grand
Lodge of Temperance Workers, which has for its object the
formation and encouragement of temperance and benevolence,
by the establishment of subordinate lodges of temperance
workers in the state of Virginia; and whereas, it is believed
that the facilities of the said society for the accomplishment of
its purposes would be greatly improved by obtaining an act of
incerporation of the trustees thereof; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
S. M. Martin, R. W. Hines, W. D. Vaughan, W. R. Cop-
pedge, Geo. W. Owens, John W. Headen, Isaiah Sumner, B.
P. Hylton, W. L. Garret, Asa Foster, W. A. Ballinger, James
N. Lindsey, William H. Mitchell, and their successors, be and
are hereby declared and constituted a body politic and corpo-
rate, under the name and style of the Grand Lodge of the Or-
der of Temperance Workers for the State of Virginia; and by
that name may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded with,
in all of the courts of law and equity in this commonwealth and
elsewhere, may have perpetual succession and a common seal,
may ordain and publish such constitution, by-laws and regula-
tions, as they may think wise and proper, and do any and all
acts they may deem necessary to carry out the objects of said
order as hereinbefore set out: provided, said laws, constitution
and regulations be not inconsistent with the laws of the United
States and of the state of Virginia.
2. That the said trustees and their successors may, to the use
and for the benefit of said grand lodge, acquire, hold and pos-
sess, rent, sell, convey, invest, and otherwise manage or dis-
pose of, as to them may seem most conducive to the benefit of
the said grand lodge, all such lands, moneys and other property
which may have been or may hereafter be acquired by the said
grand lodge, subject always to the direction and control of the
said grand lodge: provided, that the sum of money and value
of personalty so acquired shall not exceed twenty thousand dol-
lars: and provided, that the amount of land so held shall not
exceed one-half acre in any one county, city or town in this
commonwealth.
3. The said trustees and their successors shall have power to
fill vacancies in their own body, the persons to be selected, in
accordance with the constitution and laws of said order, from
the active members of said order, and shall hold their offices as
trustees no longer than they continue members of the said order
in good and regular standing.
4. ‘The said board of trustees may exact from any officer of
the grand lodge a bond in accordance with its constitution, in
such penalty as said board of trustees may deem proper, said
bond to be made payable to the Grand Lodge of Temperance
Workers, conditioned for the faithful performance of duty.
5. Five of said board of trustees shall constitute a quorum
for the transaction of business.
6. This act, subject to amendment, modification or repeal, at
the pleasure of the general assembly of Virginia, shall be ‘in
force from its passage.
