Chap. 215.—An ACT to submit the question of increasing the levy
for district school purposes to the qualified voters of Monterey and
Stonewall school districts of Highland county.
Approved February 24, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
an election shall be held in Monterey and Stonewall school
districts, in Highland county, by the respective judges of elec-
tion in said districts, on Thursday, the twenty-seventh day of
May, eighteen hundred and eighty-six, at the several voting
places therein, to enable the qualified voters of said districts to
declare by their votes whether or not they will submit to an
increase of the tax for district school purposes; said tax, in-
clusive of the levy now authorized by law, not to be less than
twenty cents, nor to exceed twenty-five cents, on every one
hundred dollars value of the real and personal taxable property
in each of said school districts; said tax to be collected and
disbursed as the district school taxes are now collected and
disbursed, and to be used for building and repairing school-
houses, and for other necessary district purposes in said dis-
tricts, and to continue at that rate not exceeding five successive
years. The ballots shall be, respectively, as follows: for in-
crease of district school tax, against increase of district school
tax: provided that notice shall be given by the sheriff posting
the time and places of voting on the front door of the court-
house, and at the several voting places in said districts thirty
days before the day of election.
2. The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots at
such election on said question, and making returns and ab-
stracts thereof, shall conform in all respects to the requirements
of the general election law of the state, except that the certifi-
cate of the judges shall be as follows:
We hereby certify, that at the election held ; votes
were cast for increase of district tax, and votes were
cast against increase of district tax.

3. If it shall appear from the abstracts and returns of said
election that a majority of the qualified voters of the said dis-
tricts, or either of them, voting upon said question, are in favor
of the said increase of tax, then it shall be the duty of the board
of supervisors of said county, to lay the levy for said purposes
in such districts or district accordingly. an
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
