CHAP. 160.—An ACT to incorporate the Barratt Humane Society, of
Fluvanna.
Approved February 18, 1886.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginja, That
Charles Enders, James D. Barrett, Andrew Jackson, Milton
Brown, Henry Randall, Albert Jackson, Penn Woodson,
George Smith, Harrell Creasey, and all others who are or may
hereafter become members of this society, be and they are
hereby constituted a body politic and corporate by the name
and style of The Barratt Humane Society, of Fluvanna, and
by that name shall have perpetual succession and a common
seal; may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, and in all
respects shall be invested with the rights and privileges con-
ferred, and subject to the restrictions and regulations prescribed
for corporations by the general law, so far as the same are ap-
plicable to this corporation, and not inconsistent with this act.
2. The corporation may take by purchase, gift, devise or
bequest, and hold real and personal estate, and lease, rent, sell
or otherwise dispose of the same, in such manner as may seem
most advantageous: provided, it shall not hold real estate ex-
ceeding five acres of land, and personal estate exceeding five
thousand dollars, and that the said corporation and its business
shall be confined to the county of Fluvanna.
3. The objects of the society shall be to help, aid and assist
its sick and destitute; to bury its dead, and take care of its
widows and orphans, and generally to cultivate and promote
good conduct and correct living among its members.
4. The said corporation shall have power to make and adopt
a constitution and by-laws, and rules and regulations for the
admission and expulsion of members, and for their government,
the election of officers, and to define their duties, and for the
use, investment, and safe-keeping and protection of its pro-
perty, real and personal: provided, the same be not inconsistent
with the laws of the United*States or this State.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
