Chap. 129.—An ACT to provide for the working of the public roads
in the counties of Northumberland and Westmoreland.
Approved February 16, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the boards of supervisors of the counties of Northumberland
and Westmoreland be and they are hereby empowered, at the
meetings of the respective boards to be held in July, eighteen
hundred and eighty-six, to take into consideration the ques-
tion of letting out to contract the working of the public roads
in each of said counties. Should a majority of either or both
of said boards be in favor of letting out said roads to be worked
by contract, the board or boards so determining shall perfect
a scheme for that purpose, which they shall submit to the
voters of their respective counties, to. be voted on at the elec-
tion for county officers to be held in May, eighteen hundred
and eighty-seven. Should the scheme submitted receive three-
fourths of the votes cast in either county, it shall become the
road law of that county, to take effect on the first of July,
eighteen hundred and eighty-seven.
2. In the meantime, and until such scheme shall have been
adopted, the general road law of the state shall be the road
law of said counties, and should said scheme be adopted _ in
either county the general road law shall continue in force, ex-
t where it may come in conflict with any of the provisions
of the law letting out the roads to contract.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
