Chap. 59.—An ACT to provide for a new registration for the city of
Portsmouth.
Approved November 22, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
each of the registrars of the several precincts of the city of
Portsmouth shall on Monday, the sixth day of April, eigh-
teen hundred and eighty-five, proceed to register the names
of all the qualified voters of his precinct who reside therein
and according to law are entitled to registration, giving notice
of the time and place thereof for at least ten days before
commencing such registration, by publication of said notice
in two newspapers published in said city, and by posting
printed notices thereof at ten public places within his pre-
cinct. Said registrars shall complete said registration within
six days from the time of commencement of same, and im-
mediately after completing the said registration shall cause
to be posted at three or more public places in their respective
precincts printed lists of all persons admitted by them to
registration. |
2. In all other respects, except as herein provided, the
duties of said registrar shall be as prescribed in the general
registration laws of the state, and the making said registra-
tion, and in all registrations hereafter, the registrar shall, in
every particular, except as hereinafter provided, be guided
and controlled by the said general registration laws of the
state, and the registration thus made shall have the same
force and virtue as though the same had been made under
the general registration laws of this state, and shall be re-
vised, altered and amended in the mode prescribed in such
laws. The registration made under this act shall take the
place of all registrations heretofore made in said city.
3. The secretary of the commonwealth shall furnish the
clerk of the corporation court of the city of Portsmouth with
80 many registration books as may be necessary to carry out
the provisions of this act.
4. This act shall bein force from its passage.
