Chap. 123.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 48 of the charter
of the city of Roanoke.
Approved November 27, 1884.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section forty-eight of an act to provide a new charter for the
city of Roanoke, approved January thirty-first, eighteen
hundred and eighty-four, be and the same is hereby amended
and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§48. There shall be elected by the qualified voters of the
city of Roanoke on the fourth Thursday in May next, and
on the fourth Thursday in May in every second year there-
after, one constable for the city, who shall hold his office for
the term of two years, and until his successor be appointed
and qualified, unless sooner removed from office. Said con-
stable shall have the power to appoint one or more deputies,
with or without security, who shall have the same powers as
the principal constable, but the principal or high constable
and his sureties shall be responsible for the acts of said depu-
ties. Said constable shall keep his office in such convenient
place in the city as may be designated by the city council,
and shall receive such compensation for his services as is
allowed by law. He shall, in all civil cases, have the same
powers and duties, and be subject to the same penalties, as
are prescribed by law for other constables, and shall perform
such duties as the city council may ordain.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
