Chap. 1.—An ACT to provide for the payment of the Danville Grays
while in the service of the state.
Approved August 23, 1884.
Whereas Company A, Third Virginia regiment of volun-
teers, known as the Danville Grays, was called into active
service by the sheriff of Pittsylvania county in aid of the
civil authority of the state,and continued in such service five
days guarding Prisoners in the said county of Pittsylvania
and the city of Danville, which service commenced on the
twelfth of August, eighteen hundred and eighty-three; and
whereas the said company expended during the said period,
and paid out in money through its treasurer for railroad fare,
rations, and other necessary expenses, the sum of one hun-
dred and sixty-six dollars and seventy-seven cents; and
whereas the said company, on the eighth day of November,
eighteen hundred and eighty-three, was called into active
service by the sergeant of the city of Danville to aid the civil
authorities of that city, and remained in said service for the
period of five days; and whereas the said troops have not been
paid anything for said services or the expenses incurred by
them,.and the laws heretofore passed providing for the pay-
ment of troops having been so construed as to exclude the
said company from the participation in the funds heretofore
appropriated ; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the auditor of public accounts be and is hereby authorized |
and directed to draw his warrant upon the treasury in favor
of said company for an amount sufficient to pay the expenses
incurred, and for the services rendered, in accordance with
and at the rate prescribed in sections six and seven of an act
approved March seventeenth, eighteen hundred and eighty-
four, entitled an act to provide for the organization, main-
tenance, and government of Virginia volunteers, and to repeal
existing laws concerning the Virginia militia: provided that
the sum of money provided for in this act shall only be paid
out of the fund appropriated by the act approved March
fifteenth, eighteen hundred and eighty-four, entitled an act
appropriating the public revenue for the fiscal years of eigh-
teen hundred and eighty-four and eighteen hundred and
eighty-five, under the clause thereof providing for the mili-
tary contingent expenses.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
