Chap. 61.—An ACT for the relief of the sureties of James L. Rubinson,
late Treasurer of Orange county.
In force January 28, 1884.
Whereas, there is an indebtedness to the state of Virginia,
on the part of James L. Robinson, late treasurer of Orange
county, of one hundred and seven dollars and titty cents. bal-
ance due on taxes for eighteen hundred and eighty, as of the
date of seventeenth March, eighteen hundred and eighty -two
and two hundred and seventeen dollars and ninet y-six cents,
for taxes of eighteen hundred and eighty-one, as of the date
of June fifteenth, eighteen hundred and eighty-two, and the
sum of one thousand nine bundred and seventy-cight dollars
and fourteen cents, for taxes for eighteen hundred and
eight-two, as of the thirty-first May, eiehteen hundred and
cighty-two, which has been brought about by the gradual
failing: he: alth and mind of said Robinson, and the consequent
inability on his part to conduct properly the duties of his
office, and even to make proper and _ sutticient returns of de-
linquent taxes. And whereas said James L. Robinson, is
himself insolvent, and said indebtedness will fall upon his sure-
ties, who were, from the circumstance of the case, prevented
from taking any steps to protect themselves; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That Joseph H.
Johnson, T. T. Johnson, Joseph H. Houseworth, Thomas P.
Wallace, W. W. Burgess, James Ray, E. W. Row, Alexander
Daley, William T. Woolfolk, John L. Woolfolk, Charles
Payne, John T. Payne, Lewis H. Reynolds, Charles F. Hume,
C. C. Buckner, and John 8. Row, the surviving sureties on
the official bond of said James LL. Robinson, late treasurer of
Orange county, and the estate of George B. Daley, deceased,
who was also a surety on said official bond, be, and they are
hereby relieved and released from the payment of four hun-
dred and sixty dollars and thirty-two cents, part of said in-
debtedness, as delinquent taxes, and that after deducting the
said sum of four hundred and sixty dollars and thirty-two
cents, from the amount of said indebtedness, and the addi-
tional sum of one bundred and ninety-three dollars and fifty
cents, on account of license tax, ordered to be refunded by
the county court of Orange county, the auditor of public ac-
counts be, and heis hereby authorized and required to accept
from said sureties, or from either or any of them, three per
centum bonds of the commonwealth of Virginia, issued under
the act approved February the fourteenth, eighteen hundred
and eighty-two, known as the Riddleberger act, at their face
value, to the amount of the balance of said indebtedness, with
interest at the rate of six per centum per annun, provided
that such payment be made in full within ninety days from
the passage of this act: and provided also that the said sure-
tics shall be liable as amongst themselves for contribution
according to the amounts paid by them. But nothing herein
shall be so construed as to apply the relief to the said James
L. Robinson, nor in anywise releasing him from the payment
of the difference between the amount due by him, and the
market value of the bonds so paid in by his sureties.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
