Chap. 554.—An ACT to empower and authorize the purchase by, and
conveyance to, the United States government of property in the city
of Portsmouth for certain purposes.
Approved March 19, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the consent of the state of Virginia is hereby given and
granted to the purchase or acquisition by the government of
the United States, or under the authority of the same, of so
much land as may be required for a site for a public building
for the accommodation of the courts, post office, and other
offices of the United States, in the city of Portsmouth.
2. That this state retains concurrent jurisdiction with the
United States over such land, so that courts, magistrates, and
other officers of this state may take such cognizance, execute
such process, and discharge such other legal functions within
the same as may not be incompatible with the consent hereby
given.
3. The lots or parcels so acquired, together with the tenc-
ments or appurtenances fur the purposes before mentioned,
shall be held exempt from all state, county, or municipal taxa-
tion, so long as the United States shall be and remain the
owner thereof.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
