Chap. 523.—An ACT to revise und digest the Code and Statutes of
Virginia.
Approved March 18, 1884.
Whereas it appears that the statute laws of this common-
weulth ought to be revised, and a new edition thereof pub-
lished; therefore,
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
three persons to be clected by a joint resolution of the gene-
ral assembly, who shall revise and digest the Code of this
commonwealth. It shall be their duty to collate and revise
all the general statutes, civil and criminal of this common-
wealth, which may be in force at the time of the completion
of their work. in performing this duty, they shall suggest
such contradictions, omissions, or imperfections as they may
discover in the statutes, and the mode in which the same
may be reconciled, supplied, or amended without producing
a radical change in the present system of statute laws of
this state; they shall arrange all the statutes under appro-
priate titles and chapters, and divide them into sections,
numbering them consecutively, from one to the end, having
regard to the division into titles and chapters; also make
such notes and explanations, and marginal references, as may
be helpful to a clear understanding of the statutes: and they
Shall, in all respects, execute and complete the revision as
hereby directed, in such manner, as in their opinion, will
harmonize the general statutes, and make the code of statute
laws, as existing at the close of this work, as complete as
possible.
2. The revisors are hereby authorized, either to deliver
the whole thereof at one time, or parts thereof at different
times, to the public printer, who shall print bundred
copies thereof.
3. The sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars shall
be paid to, and divided between the persons chosen under
this act, in equal proportion; which sum, and the expense
of said printing also, shall, when the work is done, be paid
upon the order of the executive, out of any money in the
treasury of this commonwealth, not otherwise appropriated:
provided that the said persons shall pay such clerk as they
may find it necessary to employ for any services he may
render.
4. They are to report to the next session of the general
assembly.
