Chap. 476.—An ACT for the improvement of streets and sidewalks in
unincorporated villages.
Approved March 17, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
persons living in unincorporated villages shall have the right
to construct at their own expense, suitable sidewalks along
any public road or street in front of their own premises:
provided the road not covered by the sidewalk shall not be
ess than twenty-two feet wide. And said property owners
or tenants shall have the right to plant shade trees along the
outer edge of the said sidewalks, and to protect said walks
and trees by posts or frames; and if any person shall wilfully
injure or destroy said walks, trees, posts or frames, or shall
wilfully ride any horse or other animal, or drive any vehicle
upon said sidewalks, he shall be deemed guilty of a misde-
meanor.
2. Persons charged with any violation of the preceding
section may be tried before a justice of the peace, asin other
cases, within the jurisdiction of said justice, and upon con-
viction shall be fined not less than two dollars and fifty cents,
nor more that twenty dollars, at the discretion of the said
justice; and the offender may be committed until the fine and
costs shall be paid, but the defendant may appeal from such
judgment to the county court, where the same proceedings
shall be had as if the defendant had been remanded to said
court for trial for said offence.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
