Chap. 407.—An ACT to amend and re-enact chapter 35 of the Acts of
1878-9, in relation to working on public roads in the counties of Scott,
Wise, Buchanan, Grayson, Carroll, Wythe, Tazewell and Dickenson.

1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
chapter thirty-five of the Acts of eighteen hundred and
seventy-eight—nine, approved January twenty-two, eighteen
hundred seventy-nine, in relation to working on public roads
in the counties of Scott, Wise, Buchanan, Grayson, Carroll,
Wytbeand Tazewell, be amended and re-enacted so as to read
as follows:
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
in the counties of Scott, Wise, Buchanan, Wythe, Grayson,
Carroll, Tazewell and Dickenson, after the first day of May,
eighteen hundred and seventy-seven, the county court shall
iuppoint surveyors for such road precinct for the term of two
years; such surveyor shall designate one or more of his road
hands, whose duty it shall be to summon his list of hands to
work upon the roads at such times and places as said over-
seer may appoint, and for every such failure he shall forfeit
fifty cents, to be collected as other fines. And every day
such hand or hands may be employed in summoning hands,
shall be deducted from the number of d: ays he is required to
work upon the road. No surveyor in cither of’ said counties
shall be entitled to compensation for his services, but shall
be exempt from serving upon petit juries: provided that no
hand or hands shall be required to work more than ten days
in any One year on opening any new road: provided further,
that the board of supervisors for the counties of Wise, Dick-
enson and Buchanan, by an order entered of reeord, may
require the road hands of said counties to work not exceed-
ing twenty days in any one year on opening any new road
in said counties.
2. All the provisions of the general road law inconsistent
with this act are hereby repealed as to the counties of Scott,
Wise, Buchanan, Tazewell, Wythe, Grayson, Carroll ani
Dickenson.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
