Chap. 236.—An ACT for the relief of D. E. Bass, late treasurer of
Campbell county.
Approved March 3, 1884.
Whereas W. W. Walker, in the year eighteen hundred and
seventy-seven, was assessed by one of the commissioners of
the revenue for the county of Campbell, with certain license
taxes, as follows: Retail liquor license, fifty dollars; bar-room
license, twenty-five dollars; merchants license, ten dollars;
bowling saloon license, twenty-five dollars, aggregating the
sum of one hundred and ten dollars; and, whereas the said
Walker failed to pay the said assessment to D. E. Bass, late
treasurer of Campbell county, as required by law to do, and
instead of so doing, very soon after said assessment was
made, removed himself and all his effects into the state of
North Carolina; and, whereas the said D. E. Bass, treasurer
as aforesaid, did not return the said Walker delinquent, which
he might have done, but did not, because he was informed
and believed that there was an ample amount of debts due
the said Walker, from which he could realize the aforesaid
tax, and was anxious to collect the same, if possible, rather
than return the said Walker delinquent; and, whereas the
said treasurer was misinformed as to the aforesaid debts, and
finally failed to collect any portion of the said assessment;
and, whereas the said assessment was returned to the office
of the auditor of public accounts; and, whereas the said D.
K. Bass, in his settlement with the auditor, was charged with
the said sum of one hundred and ten dollars, and paid the
same into the treasury of the state; therefore,
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the auditor of public accounts be, and he is hereby authorized
and directed to draw his warrant upon the treasurer of the
state, in favor of D. £. Bass, late treasurer of Campbell, for
the sum of eighty-five dollars.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
