Chap. 51.—An ACT allowing S. Bassett French, judge of the hustings
or corporation court of Manchester, compensation for helding two
terms of the hustings or corpuration court of Alexandria, pending
the disability of the judge of said court.
Approved February 3, 1882.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
upon the certificate of the clerk of the hustings or corpora-
tion court of the city of Alexandria, of the number of days
of service performed by 8S. Bassett French, judge of the hust-
ings or corporation court of the city of Manchester, while
holding court for the late A. W. Chilton, late judge of the
hustings or corporation court of the city of Alexandria, in
April, eighteen hundred and cighty-one, and in January, eigh.
teen hundred and eighty-two, the auditor of public accounts
is hereby directed to issue his warrant on the treasurer, pay-
able out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appro.
priated, in favor of the said S. Bassett French, in compensa.
tion tor said service, at the same rate of pay and mileage
now allowed circuit court judges by law.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
Chap. 51.—An ACT to provide for the erection of a suitable building
for the confinement and employment of the female convicts in the
penitentiary.
Approved April 14, 1882.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, -That the super-
intendent of the penitentiary, with the approval of the board
of directors, is hereby authorized to have erected, on the
nitentiary grounds, outside of the main buildings, a suita-
le building for the confinement and employment of the
female convicts in the penitentiary; and in the erection of
said building, the superintendent shall employ convict labor
as far as may be practicable; and for the payment of the
material for said building, and such work as cannot be done
by the convicts, the superintendent, with the approval of the
board of directors, may draw his draft on the auditor of
public accounts for an amount, or amounts, not to exceed the
sum of twenty thousand dollars, to be paid out of any money
in the treasury not otherwise appropriated.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
