Chap. 222.—_An ACT to amend and re-enact section one of an act
approved March 12, 1878, entitled an act to amend and re-enact cer-
tain sections of the Code of 1873, and certuin Acts of Assembly,
amendatory thereof, and other Acts of Assembly, in relation to the
salaries of certain officers of the government and their employees; com-
pensation of members and officers of the General Assembly, mileage and
other allowances; to detine the salaries of certain officers; und to
repeal chapter 153 of the Acts of 1874, and section 27 of chapter 16;
and sections 2, 4, and 6 of chapter 161; and sections 5, 16, and 24 of
chapter 18 of the Code of 18738, and all other acts or parts of acts in
conflict.

1. Be it enacted by the gencral assembly of Virginia, That
section one of an act entitled an act to amend and re-enact
certain sections of the Code of eighteen hundred and seventy-
three, and certain acts of assembly amendatory thereof, and
other acts of assembly, in relation to the salaries of certain
officers and so on, approved March the twelfth, eighteen bun-
dred and seventy-eight, be amended and re-enacted to read as
follows:
§ 1. The governor the sum of five thousand dollars. The
governor is hereby authorized to employ a clerk for such
time as the public service may require, at a salary not exceed-
ing the rate of twelve hundred dollars per year, payable
monthly on the certificate of the governor: provided that no
aid-de-camp shall be allowed pay, except during any period
of invasion or insurrection within the commonwealth. The
secretary of the commonwealth, two thousand dollars. He
shall have the power to appoint such clerical force as he may
deem necessary to the efficiency of his department, and to
apportion such salaries to several clerks—one of whom shall
be assistant librarian—as he may think proper: provided the
aggregute amount paid to such clerical force shall not exceed
two thousand dollars per annum.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
