Chap. 218.—An ACT to renew the charter of the Great Falls Manufac-
turing Company.
Approved March 6, 1882.
Whereas on the first day of May, eighteen hundred and
nay two, it was enacted by the general assembly of the state
of Virginia, as follows:
An act to incorporate the Great Falls manufacturing com-
pany.
§ 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of the state of
Virginia, That Thomas Ap. C. Jones, William A. Bradley,
Hall Neilson, Patterson Jones, Thomas R. Love, Spencer M.
Ball, and such other persons as they may associate with
them, be and they are hereby incorporated and made a body
litic and corporate, under the name and style of The Great
alls Manufacturing Company, for the purpose of manufac-
turing cotton, hemp, flax, wools, silk, paper, iron, copper,
brass, lumber, and wood, and for improving the water-power
at or near the Great Falls of the Potomac river, in the county
of Fairfux, and they are hereby invested with all the rights,
powers, and privileges conferred, and made subject to all the
restrictions and regulations imposed on such bodies politic
and corporate by tho fifty-seventh chapter of the Code of
Virginia.
§ 2. The capital stock of said company shall not be less
than one hundred thousand dollars nor more than one mil-
lion of dollars, to be raised by subscription, in shares of one
hundred dollars each, at any place in this commonwealth, or
elsewhere, under the superintendence of any two or more of
the persons named in the first section of this act, or of com-
missioners appointed by a majority of them.
§ 3. The said company shall have the right to purchase
and hold lands, in one or more tracts, in the county of Fair-
fax, not exceeding three thousand acres.
§ 4. This act shall be in force from its passage, and shall be
subject to any amendment, alteration, or modification, at the
pleasure of the general assembly; and whereas, by section
fifteen of chapter eighty-four of the acts of the said assem-
bly, passed at the session of eighteen hundred and thirty-
six-seven, the duration of the charters of all manufacturing
or mining companies in the state of Virginia, created by
an act of the assembly subsequent to the thirteenth day of
February, eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, is limited to
the period of thirty years and no longer; and whereas, by
virtue of the said section fifteen of the said chapter eighty-
four, the charter of the Great Falls manufacturing company
is now about to expire; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That.
the charter of the said Great Falls manufacturing company
be and the same hereby is extended, continued, and renewed
in full force and effect for a further period of thirty years,
next after the first or original period of its duration.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage, subject, how-
ever, to amendment, alteration, or modification, at the pleas-
ure of the general assembly.
Chap. 218.—An ACT to secure to tax-payers in cities and towns the
right of public school education for their children.
Approved March 6, 1882.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful for any person who is a tax-payer and citizen of Vir-
inia, owning real estate in any city, town, or county school
district of the commonwealth, to send his children to any
public free school in said city, town, county, or school dis-
trict, subject to the laws regulating public free schools in
said city, town, county, or school district, as though said tax-
payer resided in said city, town, county, or school district.
And any guardian who is a tax-payer for his ward or wards,
as aforesaid, shall be entitled to the privileges above named
for his ward or wards, if citizens of Virginia.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
