Chap. 132.—An ACT to incorporate Mount Calvary Lodge, No. 73,
Independent Order of Good Samaritans, of Berkeley, Norfolk county,
Virginia.
Approved February 15, 1882.
Whereas there have existed for some time past in the vil-
lage of Berkeley, Norfolk county, Virginia, an association of
persons known as Mount Calvary lodge, number seventy-
three, of Independent Order of Good Samaritans, the pur-
poses and objects of which are solely benevolent and chari-
table, which, by the contributions of its members, has
accumulated funds, which, if properly invested in the pur-
chase of real estate, will more effectually enable said associa-
tion to carry out the purposes of their organization, and to
that end desire an act of incorporation; therefore,
- 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Jacob E. Reid, R. G. L. Paige, Nathaniel Holmes, B. F. Trott-
man, William R. Mundin, Henry Boothe, and George T.
Mundin, and such other persons as are now or may hereafter
become members of the association, be and they are hereby
made a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of
Mount Calvary lodge, number seventy-three, of Independent
Order of Good Samaritans, of Berkeley, Norfolk county, Vir-
ginia, and by that name may sue and be sued, plead and be
impleaded, have perpetual succession and a common seal, and
in all repects shall be invested with the rights and privileges
conferred, and subject to the restrictions prescribed for cor-
porations by the general law, so far as the same are applica-
le to this corporation and not inconsistent with this act.
Z. The said corporation may take, by purchase, pift, devise,
, or bequest, and hold, real and personal estate, and lease, rent,
sell, or otherwise dispose of the same in such manner as may
seem most advantageous: provided it shall not hold real
estate exceeding five thousand dollars in value.
3. The object of the association incorporated by this act,
shall be the mutual benefit, protection, and assistance of its
members, the care of their widows and orphans, and provi-
sion for their burial when dead.
4. The said association shall have power to make and adopt
a constitution and by-laws, rules and regulations for the
admission, suspension, and expulsion of members, and for
their government for the safe-keeping and protection of its
property and funds: provided the same be not inconsistent
with the laws of this state and of the United States.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
