Chap. 69.—JOINT RESOLUTIONS relative to the repeal of a joint
resolution, adopted March 15th, 1850, transferring to the Orange and
Alexandria railroad company a claim of the state of Virginia against
the United States government.
Approved February 20, 1878.
Whereas, by resolution of the general assembly of Virginia,
adopted March fifteenth, eighteen hundred and fifty, a claim
of the commonwealth for one hundred and twenty thousand
dollars, for money advanced to the United States by Vir-
ginia, was transferred to the Orange and Alexandria railroad
company upon the consideration that it should prosecute and
recover said claim, and, when recovered, should issue certifi-
cates of stock in said company to the amount of the sum
recovered, to the president and directors ot the literary fund,
to be held by them to the use and benefit of the primary
schools, for the purposes of primary education in the com-
monwealth; and whereas the said railroad company has
never prosecuted said claim to a recovery, and has become
insolvent, so that the stock thereof is utterly worthless,
whereby it will be altogether useless to invest the proceeds
of any such recovery in the stock of such insolvent com-
pany; therefore,
1. Resolved (the House of Delegates concurring), That the
said resolution, adopted March fifteenth, eighteen hundred
and fifty, be and the same is hereby repealed. |
2. Resolved, That our senators and representatives in con-
gress be requested to exert their best efforts to recover the
amount of the claim aforesaid.
3. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded
by the governor to the senators and representatives of Vir-
ginia in congress. |
