Chap. 211.—An ACT to incorporate the Mount Vernon Friendly Aid
society, of Halifax county.
Approved March 12, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Samuel J. Elliot, Doctor Stephens, Allen Thomas, Philip
Hardy, B. J. Medley, Edward Hankins, Moses Deden, Hubard
Haymes, E. M. Russell, Charles Dodson, and C. C. Crawford,
and such other persons as are now or may hereafter become
members of the society, be and they are hereby made a body
politic and corporate, by the name and style of The Mount
ernon Friendly Aid society of Halifax county, the object of
which shall be, to dispense charity and promote the cause of
education of the poor, and by tbat name shall have perpetual
succession and a common seal; may contract and be con-
tracted with, sue and be sued, with power to purchase,
receive, and hold, to them and their successors, forever, any
lands not exceeding one acre in amount, goods and chattels,
or to receive such property by gift, bequest or otherwise,
for beneficial purposes of said society. They shall also have
the power to rent, sell, or loan for the use and benefit of the
said society, any of the property so acquired: provided, how-
ever, that the lunds, goods, and chattels so authorized to be
held, shall not exceed in amount and value five thousand
dollars.
2. That the members of said society, or such members
thereof as they shall determine to be a quorum for such
purpose, shall have power to make such constitution, by-
laws, and regulations for the government of said society and
its officers, and the execution of its objects, not inconsistent
with the laws of this state, or of the United States, as they
may think proper; and shall have power to require such
fees, fines, and contributions from its members as they shall
deem proper for the purposes of said society.
3. The legislature reserves to itself the right to modify or
repeal this act at pleasure. |
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
