Chap. 108.—An ACT to incorporate the State Grand Lodge of Knights
of Damon, No. 1, of Virginia.
Approved February 22, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
J. C. Phinelton, J. N. Carter, T. C. Johnson, J. H. Wilkerson,
C. B. Nicholas, Robert Johnson, David Parson, and such other
persons as are now or may hereafter be regularly associated
with them, be and they are hereby incorporated and made a
body politic and corporate under the name and style of The
State Grand Lodge of Knights of Damon, number one, of
the state of Virginia, and by that name shall have perpetual
succession and a common seal; may sue and be sued; plead
and be impleaded, and may purchase and hold to them and
their successors such lands and tenements, goods, and chat-
tels of any kind whatever, as may be conducive to the objects
of such association: provided, however, that any real estate
so acquired or held, shall not exceed in the aggregate fifty
acres. It shall be lawful for said grand lodge to borrow a
sum of money not exceeding fifty thousand dollars, at a rate
not exceeding the legal rate of interest, for the purpose of
erecting a building sujtable for a hall and as an asylum for
the widows and orphans, giving security for the sum so bor-
rowed, by deed of trust or mortgage on its real estate.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage, and be sub-
ject to amendment, modification, and repeal, at the pleasure
of the general assembly.
