Chap. 358.—An ACT to incorporate the trustees of Jonathan Lodge,
1,434, Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, of the villageof Hampton.
Approved April 4, 1877.
Whereas there is established in the village of Hampton, in
the state of Virginia, a benevolent institution known as the
Jonathan Todye, No. 1434, of the Grand United Order of
Odd Fellows, which bas for its objects mutual aid and assis-
tance of its members in time of sickness, and burial of de-
ceased members, the support of their widows and the educa-
tion of their orphans; and whereas it is believel that the
facilities of the said institution, for the accomplishment of
its benevolent purposes, would be greatly promoted by ob-
taining an act of incorporation of the trustees of the said
Jonathan Lodge; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
R. M. Smith, A. G. Lee, James Barley, W. T. Smith, R.
Echols, J. L. Edwards, C. H. Reddick, T. N. Brown and
Thaddeus Williams, and their successors, be and they are
hereby appointed a body politic and corporate by the name
and style of the Jonathan Lodge, number fourteen hundred
and thirty-four, of the village of Hampton; and by that
name shall have a perpetual succession and common seal ;
may contract and be contracted with; sue and be sued; may
acquire and receive, hold, possess and enjoy, and may rent,
sell, convey, invest and otherwise manage or dispose of, as
to them may seem most conducive of the interest and pro-
motion of the benevolent purposes of the said Jonathan
Lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-four, of the
Order of Odd Fellows, of the village of Hampton, all lands,
money, or other property, real or personal, which may have
been, or may be given, or otherwise acquired for the use of
the said Jonathan Lodge, number fourteen hundred and
thirty-four, of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, of
the village of Hampton, and the said trustees and their suc-
cessors shall hold office as trustees no longer than they re-
main members of-the said Jonathan Lodge, or till their suc-
cessors enter upon the discharge of their duties as trustees:
provided that the sum of money so acquired shall not exceed
the sum of twenty thousand dollars: and provided that the
amount of land held by them shall not exceed one-half of an
acre in the village of Hampton.
2..The trustees herein named shall continue to act as such
until their successors are duly elected and enter upon the
discharge of their duties as trustees.
3. The trustees, nine in number, shall be elected according
to the rules and laws of the aforesaid Jonathan Lodge, num-
ber one thousand four hundred and thirty-four, of the Grand
United Order of Odd Fellows, of the village of Hampton,
and shall bave power to appoint such officers as may be re-
quisite, and shall exact from any of them such bonds or other
security, in such penalty as the trustees shall direct, condi-
tioned for the faithful performance of their duties; and the
bonds of the secretary and treasurer of said lodge, and other
officers of whom bonds may be required, may be made pay-
able to said trustees: provided that nothing herein contained
shall be construed as authorizing said company to establish
any lottery or gift enterprise, or to dispose of any property
by lot or chance.
4. Three trustees shall constitute a quorum for the trans-
action of business; but it shall require a majority of all the
trustees to constitute a quorum for the sale of real estate.
5. This act shall take effect from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, modification or repeal, at the pleasure
of the general assembly.
