Chap. 174.—An ACT to enable and authorize the council of Danville
to levy a special tax forthe purpose of building a town jail, and pay-
ing the floating debt of said town.
Approved March 20, 1877.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the council of the town of Danville, in addition tothe powers of
taxation now conferred by the charter of said town, be autho-
rized and empowered to levy and impose upon the real and
personal property, licenses, and other taxable subjects of said
town, 4 special tax in and fortbe years eighteen hundred and
seventy-seven and eighteen hundred and seventy-eight, not
exceeding in all the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars, for
the purpose of building a town jail and paying the floating
debt of said town: provided that not more than twelve thou-
sand five hundred dollars shall be so levied and imposed in
any one of said years: and provided also, that the ordinance
of the council levying and imposing said tax, shall be pub-
Jishe- prior to the fifteenth day of May in each of said years,
and shall not thereafter be changed or altered with a view to
increasing the tax of that year, or imposing a tax on other
subjects than those in said ordinance designated.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
