Chap. 299.—An ACT to Incorporate the Abingdon Academy of Medi-
cine.
Approved April 29, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Doctors E. M. Campbell, W. F. Burr, G. C. Greenway, R. J.
Preston, William White and H. M. Grant, and such other
persone as are now associated as the Abingdon Academy of
edicine, or may hereafter become associated with them, are
hereby constituted a body corporate and politic, by the name
of The Abingdon Academy of Medicine, to be located in the
town of Abingdon, for the purpose of the collection, diffa-
sion, interchange, preservation and general advancement of
medical knowledge, and the cultivation of kindly, professional
and personal intercourse among its members. :
2. The said corporation shall have power to elect fellows
of the academy, make and adopt a constitution and by-laws,
rules and regulations for the admission and expulsion of its
‘members and their government; the election of its officers,
and to define their duties, and for the safekeeping and pro-
tection of its property and funds; and from time to time to
alter or repeal such constitution, by-laws, rules and regula-
tions: provided, that the same be not inconsistent with the
constitution and laws of the United States or of the state of
Virginia.
3. That they shall be capable of suing and of being sued
in any of the courts of law or equity of the commonwealth;
that they shall have perpetual succession, and be authorized
to use a common seal.
4. That it shall be lawful for the said academy to require
of persons admitted to membership therein, such admission
fees and annual contributions as a legal quorum thereof may,
from time to time enact; and if any member shall refuse or
fail to pay such admission tee or annual contribution, that\
the same shall be recoverable by the academy on motion with |
ten days’ notice, before any magistrate or court. :
5. The said corporation may purchase and hold or lease Real
any real or personal estate: provided, that it shall not hold aa
any real estate exceeding one acre of land.
