Chap. 28.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Section 4, Chapter 129,
Acts of 1871-72, Entitled an Act to Incorporate The Town of New-
port in Giles County, Virginia. ‘
Approved February 5, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the fourth
section of chapter one hundred and twenty-nine, of Acts of
eighteen hundred and seventy-one and seventy-two, entitled
an act to incorporate the town of Newport, in the county of
Giles, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
““§ 4. The said council shall have power and authority to
improve the streets, walks and alleys of said town; to build
& prison or jail house, and any other house necessary for said
town ; to arrest and punish, by reasonable fine and imprison-
ment, drunkenness, the firing of guns, running of horses or
other disorder; to license and regulate shows and other public
exhibitions, and to tax the same as they may deem expe-
dient ; to appoint all such officers as they may deem necessary
for conducting the affairs of said town not otherwise provi-
ded for in this act, and allow them such compensation as
they may deem reasonable; and finally to make all such by-
laws, rules and regulations as they may deem necessary and
roper for the good government of the town, provided they
e not contrary to the laws of this State or the United States,
and the same to amend, repeal, or enforce by reasonable fines
and penalties, not exceeding for any one offence the sum of
twenty dollars, to be recovered withcosts in the name of the
mayor of said town, nor exceeding one month’s imprison-
ment in the town prison.” |
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
