Chap. 213.—An ACT to Incorporate the Sons of Levi of the City of
Petersburg.
Approved April 18, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Abraham Jackson, Daniel Jones, Abraham Temple, Benjamin
Shell, Edmond Allen, Nelson Spurlock, Burgess Lee, and all
others who now are or may hereafter become members of
the society, be, and they are hereby made a body politic and
corporate, by the name and style of the Sons of Levi in the
city of Petersburg, Virginia, and by that name shall have
perpetual succession and a common seal, may sue and be
sued, plead and be impleaded, with power to purchase, re-
ceive, and hold, to them and their successors forever, any lot
or lots of Jand in or near the said city of Petersburg, upon
which to erect a suitable building in which to hold its meet-
ings, not exceeding one acre of land in the whole, together
with such personal estate as may be necessary for beneficial
purposes of said society: provided, that the lands, goods, and
chattels so authorized to be held shall not exceed in amount
or value five thousand dollars.
2. Said society shall have power to make such constitution,
by-laws, and regulations for the government of said society
and the execution of its objects, not inconsistent with the
laws of this state or of the United States, as they may think
roper.
3° The treasurer shall receive all moneys accruing to the
society and property delivered to his care. Before entering
on the discharge of his duties, he shall give bond, with such
security and in such penalty as the society may direct, made
ayable to the society, and conditioned for the faithful per-
ormance of his duties; and the society may obtain a judg-
ment for the amount thereof, or for any special delinquencies
of the treasurer, on motion in any court of record against
the said treasurer and his securities, his or their executors
or administrators, upon giving ten days’ previous notice of
such motion.
4, The legislature reserves the right to modify or repeal
this act, at pleasure.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
