Chap. 185.—An ACT to Incorporate The Culpeper Library Association.
Approved April 15, 1874.
Whereas, it is represented that Robert S. Lewis, James G.
Field, Lewis P. Nelson, Benjamin Pulliam, John R. Strother,
A. M. Allan, Richard Lewis, Jacob S. Eggborn, James M.
Beckham, James W. Cochran, W. D. Meriwether and A.
Roane Alcock, have associated themselves together for the
purpose of disposing of certain real and personal estate to
the best advantage, the proceeds arising therefrom to be de-
voted to the purchase of a public library, and the erection of
a suitable building for library and high school purposes; and
believing that, by prompt and judicious measures the objects
in view can be accomplished, to effect which corporate privi-
leges and facilities are deemed expedient—
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the persons above named and such others as may hereafter
be associated with them, be and they are hereby created a
body politic and corporate under the name and style of The
Culpeper Library Association, for the purpose of purchasing
a public library, and erecting in the town of Culpeper, suit-
able buildings for library and high school purposes, and to
that end, all the estate, real and personal, now held by them
for the purpose aforesaid, or hereafter acquired therefor,
whether by purchase, gift, devise or donation, in any way,
is hereby vested in said corporation, for the purposes and
objects aforesaid: provided, that the amount of property held
at one time, shall not exceed in value one hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. °
2. The said corporation is hereby invested with power to
buy, sell and dealin real estate and personal property, and
upon such terms and in such manner as to them shall seem
most expedient, and best calculated to effect the objects and
purposes aforesaid. The said corporation may sell, at private

personal estate, and that nothing shall be done or performed
in conflict with or in violation of the provisions of the con
stitution and laws of Virginia: provided, -that the property

other property of similar character; nor shall anything herein
contained be construed as exempting the said company from
any license tax required by the general law.
