Chap. 181.—An ACT to amend the Charter of the Town of Potomac.
Approved April 9, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
an act to incorporate the town of Potomac, in force January
twenty-first, eighteen hundred and seventy-three, be amended
and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
“§1. That so much of the land as lies and is contained
within the following boundary, viz: Beginning at a point
midway between North point and the island in Ghappawam-
sic creek; thence up the south bank or shore of said creek to
the telegraph road; thence along said telegraph road to the
waters of Little creek; thence down the centre of said creek
to the line dividing the lands of Messrs. Graves and Ennis;
thence northerly along said line to the channel of Quantico
bay; thence to north bank of said Quantico; thence along
said north bank to the middle of Potomac river; thence along
said line to a point opposite the place of beginning; thence
westerly to the initial point, shall be and is hereby made a
town corporate, by the name and style of the town of Poto-
‘mac. And by that name may sue and be sued; ang by that
name and style, shall have and exercise the powers herein-
after granted or conferred upon towns by the fifty-fourth
chapter of the Code of Virginia of eighteen hundred and
sixty, and of all Jaws now in force, or that may hereafter be
enacted for the government of towns containing less than
five thousand inhabitants, not in conflict or incompatible with
the grants, powers and duties conferred on the board of con-
trol, as provided in the act incorporating the Potomac land
and improvement company, as amended and re-enacted in
force.
“§ 2. The officers of said town shall consist of seven trus-
tees, who shall compose a council, a majority of whom shall
constitute a quorum for the transaction of business, and the
following named persons shall be the Officers: Frank A. Cur-
tis is hereby appointed mayor; and George Bell, George
Brink, Frank H. Frankenburg, John R. Wheat, T. E. Morris
and John Wiggins, are hereby appointed trustees, who shall
compose the council. The said mayor and council shall have
power to appoint a sergeant and such other officers as may
e necessary, together with a police force, for the preserva-
tion of order, who shall remain in office until their successors
are elected and qualified according to law.
“§ 3. The said mayor and councilmen above-named and
appointed in this act, shall continue in office until the first
onday in July, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, and
thereafter until their successors shall be elected and qualified
according to law.”
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
