Chap. 115.—An ACT to Incorporate the Richmond, Craigton, and
Hanover Turnpike Company, in the Counties of Henrico and Hanover.
Approved March 16, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
for the purpose of constructing a turnpike road from the city
of Richmond, near the terminus of Twenty-fifth street, in
the direction of what is called the Craigton road, in the
county of Henrico, to the Chickahominy river, and thence
to Allen’s mill, in the.county of Hanover, or some suitable
point near the said mill. It shall be lawful to open books
for receiving subscriptions to an amount not exceeding six
thousand dollars, divided into shares of twenty-five dollars
each, to constitute a joint stock capital. The said books
shall be opened under the direction of George Watt, Elijah
Baker, R. L. Butler, S. S. Sutherland, H. C. Cabell, John
Hechler, James W. Otey, William Otey, Samuel J. Hodgson,
William Christian, Richard R. Carter, James Smith, Doctor
John E. Friend, J. H. Cannell, Doctor William F. Gaines,
William Gaines, James E. Bowles, Seaton G. Tinsley, Albert
D. Wicker, Isaac Burnett, Richard Burnett, Walker Hogan,
F. W. Johnson, T. W. Talley, Thaddeus Foster, Doctor Charles
R. Cullen, Ralph R. Horne, William Gibson, Bradley T.
Johnson, A. B. Curtis, or any three of them, and at such
place or places as any five of the above-named persons may
apport
. When one-fifth of the capital stock shall have been sub-
scribed, the subscribers shall be, and are hereby incorporated
into a company, by the name and style of the Richmond,
Craigton, and Hanover Turnpike Company, subject to the
provisions of the latest edition of the Code of Virginia:
provided, that the said company shall not be required to
make a summer or side road, nor to cover the said road with
stone or gravel; that the said road shall be cleared not less
than thirty feet wide, and constructed not less than twenty
feet wide; that the grade of the road shall nowhere exceed
five degrees; and the said company shall, in addition to the
privileges herein conferred, be, and are hereby authorized to
erect gates and charge toll according to law so soon as a
section of five miles shall be completed.
3. Parts of the public road known as the Craigton road,
or any other public road which may lie along the prescribed
route of said turnpike, may be taken and used by the said
company to construct their road thereon: provided, that the
county court of the county in which said public road lies
shall consent thereto, and so direct by order of court.
4. The said turnpike road shall be commenced within one
year from the passage of this act, and shall be completed
within two years from the organization of the company.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
